ZEIT MAGAZINES TRAVEL SPECIAL // / by sophie green

9 years of my travel photography archive + interview is published in Zeit Magazines annual travel photography special.

The images are part of my ongoing series, ‘Brief Encounters’, which exposes intimate abstractions amidst the varied landscapes of cities I’ve traversed across including Bolivia, Bulgaria, Colombia, Cuba, Fiji, France, Georgia, Greece, India, Ireland, the UK, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Seville, Thailand, Ukraine, and Vietnam, spanning from 2016 to 2023.

The series named ‘Brief Encounters’, captures snippets of everyday life, moments often overlooked yet brimming with significance. Together, these photographs form an offbeat memoir of humanity, weaving together the multi-layered stories of lived experiences.

My favorite pleasure when I travel is spending days walking around a city - roaming the streets, neighborhoods, walking in shops, buildings or even people’s houses when I’m invited. I don’t plan a route. I let curiosity lead me. I want to be around culture. Sharing conversations. Observing. Learning.

By default I feel a kinda anxious energy and have an over analytical mind that I find myself trying to exert but there is something about this process of wondering that unveils presence & awareness in me. The gift of awareness allows me to notice - creating connections.

The tone & quality of light changes minute to minute. Living in England – an often grey country. I am hypnotised by the sunlight when I travel. Also the ever changing smells, sounds and scenes. I’m fascinated by the routines, rituals, mannerisms, cultural customs, traditions and value systems of other people. The everyday choreography of life is dynamic and there is always something significant to notice in a new place. By documenting what I notice it creates a memory, a trigger for me - I look at the images and I can center myself back in the experience.

My other projects require a lot of research made over multiple years and I think a lot about the ethical issues of my approach to different communities. There is something liberating about working on a project that is exclusively about individual situations. As I continue to travel this series of snapshots ‘Brief Encounters’ is yet another of my favourite form: a long term project.
