Portrait // Robina, Holland Park, London. / by sophie green

I first saw Robina on the 452 bus. I couldn't stop staring at her. Robina wears her make up like this every day. It's her daily get up. She agreed to let me take her portrait and we exchanged contact details. We were emailing constantly for 9 months trying to pin down a date. Eventually I photographed Robina at her flat. She used to be a professional tennis player. Her flat is filled with fake cats, cat pictures, paintings and sculptures. Total obsessive but she doesn't own a cat. Half way through the shoot Robina told me she was a very spiritual person. She said she could see my grandmother in the room standing beside me. Apparently she was looking down on me and said I make people happy and smile and that I should worry about making myself happy not always making other people happy. She also said I should be careful about the strangers I photograph because she worries about me. I really like to believe that moment was true.
